Ubisoft has quietly launched an NFT game for PC

Ubisoft’s take on an NFT game comes three years after the company expressed interest in creating blockchain games.

Ubisoft quietly launched a new web3 game, titled “Champion Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles” on October 23, 2024. According to its official website, the game is a “competitive multiplayer turn-based RPG” where players can “claim” their champions by purchasing magical playable figurines (which are the NFTs), with each one being a “living relic” of the game’s fantasy world. Each figurine can be purchased either by using in-game currency or cryptocurrency.

The game didn’t get an official release announcement on Ubisoft’s swathe of social media sites, likely because Ubisoft received a fair amount of backlash when the gaming company expressed interest in creating NFT based games.

Even so, Ubisoft has steadily established itself in the realm of NFTs and cryptocurrency by funding the blockchain gaming company Animoca Brands, becoming a founding member of the Blockchain Game Alliance, and even establishing its own NFT platform called Ubisoft Quartz back in 2022.

Champion Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is in itself a collaboration effort between Ubisoft and the Japanese web3 studio Double Jump Tokyo, which has become a key marketing partner for the game in Asia. Double Jump Tokyo integrated Champion Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles into the Oasys Layer 2 HOME Verse blockchain, enabling Ubisoft to issue NFTs of the game over the HOME Verse chain.

As of writing, Ubisoft has minted over 75,000 heroes for Champion Tactics: Grimoria, with prices ranging from $7 to $63,000, although it is possible to play the game as a free-to-play player. Players are only required to have a Ubisoft account and a supported blockchain wallet to play it.
