YouTuber Globert spent 24 hours in the Metaverse and discovered that most people in the online virtual reality game were children who spend their time at ‘MetDonald’s’
A confused gamer spent 24 hours in the Metaverse, only to discover there was practically no one else there.
In a video published July 27, YouTuber Globert documented his time spent inside Meta’s online virtual reality game Horizon Worlds, one of the Metaverses. What he found was a sparse hellscape, complete with its own ‘McDonald’s’ – or ‘MetDonald’s’.
Globert recorded his findings via a VR headset, which plunged him straight into the online universe. His first sighting was an almost totally abandoned shopping centre, with a couple of other ‘people’ knocking about who didn’t appear too interested in chatting.
“The only person who wanted to talk to me was an infant,” said Globert, after running into someone who said they were “three”.
“That is shocking – like, which three-year-old’s parents are letting their kid on something like this,” said Globert disapprovingly.
The whole vibe of the place was very sad. “Is this really the future?” mused Globert. Indeed, just watching the short clip was quite tough viewing – like some sort of post-apocalyptic scene where everyone’s a 40-year-old bloke trying to escape their wife.
In order to try and find somewhere a bit more ‘happening’, the gamer “joined the most popular place in the Metaverse – MetDonald’s”.
Upon arrival to the virtual version of the fast food giant, to their dismay, Globert was treated to an empty diner full off screaming sounds. Imagine the sound of the worst Maccies you’ve ever been to, at 2am on a Saturday night – truly, nightmare inducing.
At least with those incidents you might be treated to a visual display of chaos, but here in the Metaverse there was an eerie absence of people and just the ghoulish sounds of feeding time.
“We had to get out of there quick,” said Globert. “That was a mistake. Luckily I could get out of there with just a tap on my headset.”
Globert returned to the uninhabited Metaverse, traipsing along empty beaches and rural surroundings. “Most of the game is just like this – super quiet, and kind of empty,” said the gamer.
In the Metaverse, you are get an avatar which then goes into online versions of the real world accessed via “an uncomfortable headset”.
When Horizon Worlds was initially released a couple of years ago by Meta, it was ridiculed by many people.
Globert continued on his travels and found that most of the ‘people’ on it were just children. It comes after British parents were urged to take caution when it comes to buying VR headsets for their kids.
In 2022 Childline, which operates a counselling service for young people over telephone, shared one terrifying encounter a girl of secondary school age had in the Metaverse.
According to the charity, one student said: “Recently I met a guy on my VR game, and I’m confused about how I should feel about him.
“He’s really bad, like he always makes sexual comments towards me and asks me to ‘kiss’ him in the game.”
