American Express Launches NFT Travel Stamps for Cardholders

Payments company American Express has introduced blockchain-based passport stamps that commemorate customer travels as digital keepsakes. The NFT stamps are stored as ERC-721 tokens on Ethereum layer-2 Base network to preserve travel memories.
Each stamp can be customized to highlight specific trip experiences, including landmark visits, memorable meals, hotel stays, or favorite activities. American Express Digital Labs Executive Vice President Luke Gebb stated the initiative addresses the disappearance of physical passport stamps in many countries.

Only U.S. Amex consumer cardholders with linked online accounts qualify for the digital passport program. The NFTs cannot be transferred between users and display limited information including country, description, and earn date, without revealing personal travel details.

Base blockchain explorer data shows the smart contract was created 25 days ago, indicating that American Express prepared the infrastructure before Monday’s announcement. The stamps appear automatically when cardholders make purchases while traveling internationally.

AmericanExpress survey data revealed 73% of respondents wanted more digital ways to commemorate past trips. Another 56% expressed missing traditional passport stamps when arriving in new countries, supporting demand for alternative solutions.

The program retroactively generates stamps for trips booked through Amex within the past two years. Customers can share their digital collections on social media platforms or save images to personal devices for future reference.

Blockchain technology enables secure data storage without centralized servers, following trends where corporations utilize public networks for record keeping. The U.S. Department of Commerce recently announced plans to publish economic statistics on blockchain systems.


Travel industry integration with cryptocurrency remains relatively niche but continues to expand through various platforms. Data shows crypto users typically spend three times more on hotel stays compared to traditional payment users.

Triple-A research indicates 14% of cryptocurrency transactions involved travel and hospitality purchases during 2024. More airlines and booking platforms now accept digital asset payments as adoption spreads across tourism sectors.
