According to a report from Decrypt, Circle Internet Group’s stock value has decreased by approximately one quarter over the past week. The stock opened near $126 on March 24, then fell sharply to close at $101. After a brief recovery, it slid further to end the week at $93, with most recent sessions closing lower.

Pressures Behind the Drop

The decline followed two concurrent developments. A draft bill from the U.S. Senate proposes a potential ban on the type of returns Circle provides to stablecoin holders. Separately, the company’s rival Tether announced it hired a major accounting firm to conduct an audit of its reserves.

Both of these issues remain unresolved and are seen as continuing to pressure the stock. Prior to this downturn, the stock had seen substantial gains following its last quarterly earnings report, and analysts had recently expressed optimism with raised price targets.

Uncertainty Over Business Model

The stock movement reflects broader questions about Circle’s business model. Analysts indicate that a key attraction for retail users holding the company’s USDC stablecoin is the passive yield, which the Senate bill threatens. Replacing this with activity-based rewards would require significant new investment and could take over a year to implement, potentially reducing the retail user base.


However, it was noted that USDC circulation has reached record levels, suggesting strong use as a payments tool. This may indicate the stock decline exaggerates the actual business risk.

The Senate draft text is anticipated to be released publicly soon, ahead of a committee review targeted for later in April. Legislators have indicated the bill must progress by then to avoid delay.
