UFC icon Conor McGregor has reignited his rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov, publicly criticizing the former lightweight champion over a recent NFT release inspired by Nurmagomedov’s signature papakha hat.
Controversy Over Papakha NFTs
Nurmagomedov unveiled a limited run of papakha-themed NFTs—digital collectibles modeled after the Dagestani headwear he popularized during his UFC walkouts.
According to circulating social media claims, the drop reportedly generated around $4.4 million.
Following the sale, several of Nurmagomedov’s earlier promotional posts were deleted from his social media accounts, a detail that immediately fueled skepticism online.
McGregor Accuses Khabib of Misleading Fans
McGregor wasted no time in condemning the project, alleging that Nurmagomedov had orchestrated a “scam” by:
- leveraging his late father’s name,
- invoking Dagestani cultural symbols, and
- allegedly removing promotional traces after profiting from the sale.
McGregor argued that the situation represented “a shame and a stain” on the legacy of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, a revered figure in MMA and Dagestani sports culture.
Nurmagomedov Responds: ‘Absolute Liar’
Nurmagomedov swiftly responded to McGregor’s accusations, calling the Irish star an “absolute liar.”
He defended the NFTs as authentic digital gifts designed to honor Dagestani heritage, insisting the project carried genuine value and transparent intentions.
The retired champion also suggested that McGregor’s comments stem from lingering bitterness over their notorious 2018 title fight, one of the most heated bouts in UFC history.
