The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) has been alerted to a scam involving sham letters and emails impersonating the Department.
The communication – bearing the DFPI logo and referencing legitimate agencies and laws – was reported to demand a “security deposit” for crypto asset mining activities. This letter did not originate from the DFPI and appears to be part of a phishing scam.
The DFPI does not require security deposits for crypto mining or related activities.
To verify whether a financial or investment service provider is licensed in California, or to submit a complaint, contact the DFPI.
