In a market marked by global geopolitical shifts and the potential for significant legislation like the Clarity Act, May has been a turbulent period for cryptocurrencies, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. The analysis highlights three digital assets currently under scrutiny.

Bitcoin

The United States holds approximately 328,000 Bitcoins, valued at roughly $25 billion, representing 1.6% of the circulating supply controlled by a single sovereign nation. This concentration means that government actions regarding Bitcoin warrant close attention. On May 6, White House advisor Patrick Witt stated at the Consensus Miami crypto conference that a major update on the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) is expected within the next few weeks. Congress has not yet codified the reserve into law, and it may never do so. Currently, there is no third-party-verifiable evidence that the SBR is operational, though the government appears to have not sold any recently seized Bitcoin, indicating it is likely being stored. A positive announcement about the SBR could push the price back toward six figures from its current level near $80,000.

Solana

Solana has experienced a challenging year. Its total value locked (TVL)—the capital deposited into decentralized finance applications on its chain—has fallen from a 2025 peak of $13.1 billion to $5.5 billion. However, a bright spot exists: the Alpenglow upgrade went live on a test network on May 11 and could launch as soon as the third quarter of this year. The upgrade aims to significantly boost Solana’s already industry-leading speed and throughput. If Alpenglow delivers the expected performance improvements, it could attract financial institutions seeking to transition operations to blockchains, potentially drawing more capital to Solana and making Q3 a possible turning point if testing proceeds well.

Zcash

In January, the entire engineering team of Zcash’s original developer, the Electric Coin Company (ECC), resigned due to an internal governance dispute. Despite this, the privacy-focused coin has risen by 127% over the last three months.
